Gary Smith

Gary was born in Irondequoit, and later moved to Pittsford where he graduated from high school before going on to Syracuse University. He spent 50 years in broadcasting, mostly in the Rochester market, with stops in Buffalo and Miami as well. Stations included WVET/WROC radio and TV, WVOR, and WHAM in Rochester, WWOL in Buffalo, and WAME in Miami. Gary was a DJ, Music Director, Program Director, Sports Director and traffic reporter, and did baseball play-by-play of the Rochester Red Wings, Section 5 tournament basketball play-by-play as well as Nazareth College basketball, and coverage of The Wegmans Rochester International Golf Tournament, the US Open, the PGA and the Ryder Cup at Oak Hill.

While at WVOR in the mid-80’s, Gary produced and hosted a weekend show, “Sinatra & The Big Bands.” He’s a long time member and former President of the Rochester Press-Radio Club, a member of the Rochester Radio Broadcaster’s Hall Of Fame, the Frontier Field Walk Of Fame, and the Section 5 Basketball Hall Of Fame. Gary lives in Perinton with his wife of more than 50 years, Anne. They have two daughters and two grandchildren. Gary spends his spare time traveling with his wife, watching their grandkids play field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse, and listening to his favorite music. Gary’s an avid golfer, and roots for SU & the Bills. Gary’s looking forward to playing the big bands & vocalists on Jazz90.1!
