The Marcus Roberts Trio

The Hilton School District Jazz Department and Hilton Music Boosters are presenting the 16th Annual Hilton Evening of Jazz on Friday, February 8 at 7 p.m. at Merton Williams Middle School. This year’s Evening of Jazz features the Marcus Roberts Trio.
In 2014, Marcus Roberts was honored to have his life and work featured on a segment of the celebrated CBS News television show 60 Minutes. The show, entitled “The Virtuoso,” traced Roberts’ life to date from his early roots in Jacksonville and at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind to his remarkable career as a modern jazz musician.
Starting at age 21, Roberts toured with Wynton Marsalis for six years before he left to tour and record with his own band. An accomplished composer who has received numerous commissioning awards, including awards from Jazz at Lincoln Center, Chamber Music America, and ASCAP among others, Roberts has long been dedicated to the training and development of younger musicians. He is on the faculty at the School of Music at Florida State University, and in May 2014, Roberts’ many contributions to the field of music were acknowledged with an honorary Doctor of Music degree from The Juilliard School.
The Marcus Roberts Trio – a long-term musical partnership between pianist Marcus Roberts, the phenomenal drummer Jason Marsalis, and gifted bassist Rodney Jordan, is known for its virtuosic style and entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. While most jazz trios have the piano front and center, all members of the Marcus Roberts Trio share equally in shaping the direction of the music by changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form at any time.
Tickets are $17 and also include performances by the Merton Williams and Hilton High School Jazz Ensembles. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door, however seating is limited.
